Challenge Rising cloud costs and operational complexity while expanding to more European markets.
Solution Azure Kubernetes Service, Azure Spot Virtual Machines, Azure Monitor, Azure Managed Grafana, Microsoft Entra ID
Result Up to 73% lower compute costs and a scalable platform supporting 21+ markets.

One platform for e-commerce insights across Europe

Tembi helps businesses understand how online markets develop across Europe. Their platform collects and analyses publicly available data about products, pricing, and trends from e-commerce websites in more than 21 countries.

These insights help companies make better commercial decisions. But behind the scenes, delivering this intelligence requires significant infrastructure. Each market needs local data collection and dedicated compute capacity.

As Tembi expanded into more countries, both the platform and the costs grew rapidly. At the same time, workloads varied significantly throughout the day. The result was an infrastructure that was expensive to run and increasingly complex to manage.

Building a platform that scales intelligently

To create a more flexible and cost-efficient foundation, Tembi partnered with Fellowmind to redesign their platform using Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) and Azure Spot Virtual Machines

Instead of running separate infrastructure for each country, Tembi consolidated everything into a single AKS cluster. Within the cluster, each market runs in its own dedicated resource pool. This ensures separation between workloads while keeping operations simple and centralized. From a single control plane, Tembi can now manage workloads across all markets.

A key part of the solution is the use of Azure Spot Virtual Machines, which allow organizations to use unused Azure compute capacity at a significantly reduced price compared to standard virtual machines.

Because Tembi’s workloads are designed to handle interruptions gracefully, Spot VMs are a natural fit. If Azure needs the capacity back, workloads are automatically rescheduled, by AKS, without affecting the platform’s functionality.

Only paying for compute when it is needed

One of the most powerful features of the platform is the ability to scale down to zero when compute resources are not needed. During off-peak hours, node pools automatically shrink. When activity increases again, the platform scales back up within minutes – supporting great scale when necessary. This means Tembi only pays for the compute capacity that is actually used.

Up to 73% lower compute costs

The new platform has delivered both financial and operational benefits. By combining Spot Virtual Machines with intelligent autoscaling, Tembi has reduced compute costs by up to 73% compared to traditional always-on virtual machines.

At the same time, expanding into new markets has become significantly easier. Where onboarding a new country previously required extensive engineering work, it can now be done in hours using standardized infrastructure templates. This allows Tembi to grow quickly without increasing operational complexity.

More time for innovation

Managing infrastructure across 21 countries from a single platform has simplified daily operations for Tembi’s engineering team. Automated deployments, central monitoring, and real-time dashboards provide full visibility across all markets. As a result, the team spends less time managing infrastructure and more time developing features that create value for their customers.

Moving to AKS with Spot VMs has been transformative for our business. We went from worrying about infrastructure costs every time we expanded into a new market, to confidently launching in 21 countries knowing our costs stay under control. The ability to scale to zero when we don't need compute, and burst when we do, means we only ever pay for what we use. It's exactly the kind of infrastructure a fast-growing data platform needs.

Ready for the next step

With a scalable and cost-efficient platform in place, Tembi is well positioned to expand into additional markets.

The standardized infrastructure makes it easy to onboard new countries, while the Spot VM strategy ensures that growth does not lead to proportional increases in infrastructure costs.

The result is a platform designed to grow alongside the business.
